The history of the Corps of Royal Marines goes back to 1664 when King Charles II sanctioned the formation of the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot. Drummers were on the original strength of this regiment, making the Buglers’ Branch, the ‘Corps of Drums’, one of the oldest in the Royal Marines.
The origins of Royal Marines Bands in the Portsmouth area can be traced back to the mid 18th Century. The present Band is a direct descendant of the Band of the Royal Marines Artillery formed in 1861.
In addition to their musical and ceremonial duties, Royal Marines musicians and buglers carry out their secondary roles on operations around the world. Including: Gulf Wars, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
During 2021-22 the band where also tasked to support Op RESCRIPT and deployed to NHS Hospitals in Bournemouth, Bath and the Nightingale Hospital in Exeter. Roles included: fitting & testing PPE, portering duties, stores, admin support as well as assisting with other essential roles. The band also provided support to the self-isolation support team for the RN as well as deploying across the UK to bolster the national covid booster vaccination programme
